Master Tung's Acupuncture: an introduction

By Ronen Rosenblatt-Nir, Lic.Ac  ·  January 2026  ·  6 min read

Most people who have heard of acupuncture picture needles placed directly in the area of pain — a sore shoulder gets needles in the shoulder, a bad knee gets needles near the knee. This is one valid approach. But there is a powerful classical system that works very differently — and often produces faster, more dramatic results.

Who was Master Tung?

Tung Ching-Chang (1916–1975) was a Chinese acupuncturist from Shandong Province who developed a unique system of acupuncture passed down within his family for generations. After relocating to Taiwan, he eventually agreed to teach his system to outsiders — and his students carried it around the world. Today, Master Tung's Acupuncture is practiced globally and is particularly well-regarded for pain management and complex chronic conditions.

What makes it different

The key distinction is that Master Tung's system uses points located primarily on the hands, arms, feet, and legs — far from the area being treated. This is called distal needling. The system maps the body in a way that allows a practitioner to treat the neck by needling the foot, or address lower back pain through points on the hand.

In practice, patients are often surprised when pain reduces immediately during the session — while the practitioner hasn't placed a single needle near the painful area.

My training in this system

I studied Master Tung's Acupuncture in Israel and subsequently completed advanced clinical training in Taichung, Taiwan under Dr. Hu — a senior disciple of Master Tung's lineage. This direct connection to the source tradition is central to how I practice.

This system is part of the integrative approach I use alongside Traditional Chinese Medicine and Dr. Tan's Balance Method. It is particularly effective for spine and disc conditions, chronic pain, and neurological conditions including neuropathy.
